Post Project: Roenwolfe (PRW)
Image

How did you get started?

Project: Roenwolfe was founded by members of the Masters of Metal forum, Tony C. (Vermiform, Sedulity) and 'Patrick Hoyt' Parris (ex-Theocracy) with visionary help and support from Bryan Edwards (ex-Seven Kingdoms, Vermiform), in late 2011.

The idea of PRW came together within minutes after a discussion between Tony and Patrick about the lack of time to invest in keeping a live act together and running. When the idea started solidifying there was no question that Bryan Edwards would play a key role in the creative element and process that it takes to put a studio effort together, including lending his vocal talents, production ideas, and experience from his and Tony's other studio project Vermiform.

When can I hear music and who writes/records/produces it?

2012 marks the musical debut of PRW as they finish up the process of completing the first original set of demo songs. The music was written and recorded by Tony, The lyrics and vocal concepts were written and arranged by Patrick and Bryan with help from Camden Cruz (Camden Cruz Entertainment [CCE]) on Alchemic Design and Reoccuring Dream.

In consideration of the busy schedule of Camden Cruz with his band Seven Kingdoms, Patrick took on the responsibility of recording his own vocal parts and Cameron Allen was recruited in from the Masters of Metal forum for his exceptional talents to mix and master the remaining demo tracks and will be staying in the producer chair with PRW for future endeavors.

Songs can be heard here: https://www.facebook.com/ProjectRoenwol ... 8091127385

The PRW Demo track listing includes songs: Born of Rage, Reoccuring Dream, Alchemic Design, and Abstractions of Independence. (Songs will be posted on facebook upon completion)

What kind of music are you?

PRW is best classified as a metal collaboration. We refuse to be thrown into a genre within a genre. We represent OUR vision of what metal is to us. The purpose and classification of music is what the composer makes of it, and we plan to make music that we enjoy first and foremost in hopes that others will equally enjoy the efforts we have made.

PRW will feature not only the founding members, but will seek out other talented musicians for guest spots and solos.

Project: Roenwolfe is a Masters of Metal Production in collaboration with Pathfinder Promotions of Atlanta Georgia.

Post Re: Project: Roenwolfe (PRW)
Here is the review I have just submitted to Metal Archives (80% rating):

Masters of Metal Productions is an upstart label ran by musicians, for musicians, and it goes to reason that they would be home to some very promising acts. The label’s policy of allowing their releases to be downloaded at no charge is proving to be a smart one, as it allows prospective fans to check out full releases by Masters of Metal bands, and make up their own minds on the merits of usually very formidable music therein. As the label’s most recent release, interestingly named Project: Roenwolfe’s demo fits in with the trend of delivering the proverbial goods, alongside the other Masters of Metal artists such as Judicator and Lascaille’s Cloud.

The demo contains four songs, yet hints at much potential from both songwriting and performance sides. The core of Project: Roenwolfe’s sound is fast, aggressive riffing over similarly raging drums, combined with clear, generally high-pitched melodic vocals (although death metal vocals make a brief appearance on “Born of Rage”). A discerning listener may notice some stylistic similarities to more aggressive side of power metal such as “Politics of Ecstasy”-era Nevermore, heavier moments of Steel Prophet’s catalogue, or even Biomechanical.

The guitar playing effortlessly marries classic power and thrash metal sensibilities with driving rhythms more commonly associated with heavier and newer genres of metal, creating an impression of barely controlled chaos that, paradoxically, retains focus and direction. At the same time, the vocalist has a voice that would fit along all the usual suspects – Dickinson, Halford, Dane, Alder – while retaining a timbre that is distinctly his. The vocal melodies are composed in a way that recalls prime Nevermore, as evidenced on “Alchemic Design” and “Reoccurring Dream”, often creating a counterpoint to the aggressive music. The (programmed) drums keep up with the songs by offering a credible impression of a modern thrash metal skin-beater.

That said, Project: Roenwolfe is also not afraid to venture from the boundaries of the style. The opener “Reoccurring Dream” features a keyboard solo that, surprisingly, adds another dimension to aggressive music instead of watering it down. The syncopated rhythms of “Alchemic Design” and the controlled chaos of closer “Abstractions of Independence” are interlaced with catchy parts that keep everything together, while “Born of Rage” goes for more simplistic, straightforward approach.

In this reviewer’s opinion, the demo is at its most interesting when Project: Roenwolfe lets loose and does not rein in the songs. Conversely, “Born of Rage”, though a fine song in its own right, feels as if it does not entirely fit with the rest of the material, as its midtempo, generally straightforward riffing feels almost too restrained when compared to near-progressive chaos of other songs. As a result, it is likely to be either one’s favorite, or one’s least favorite track on the demo, since the slight stylistic difference makes it stand out for better or worse. Of course, it is also a function of the demo containing only four tracks, which naturally draws much more attention to each individual song. It would be interesting to hear the band’s full-length album, apparently due some time in 2013, which should give a better idea on Project: Roenwolfe’s overall direction, and on where each song fits into the members’ musical vision.

The only other point of criticism would be production of the demo, which is at times inconsistent. There is a feeling that the songs might have been recorded at different times, as there are fluctuations in volume and sound quality between the songs (in particular, “Reoccurring Dream” and “Born of Rage” have distinctly different recording sound from the other two songs). At times, these fluctuations detract from total immersion in what Project: Roenwolfe are trying to achieve, although at no point do they inhibit the enjoyment of music. That said, this is the band’s first demo, and this is a minor quip, which will hopefully not be the case on their full-length album.

Overall, Project: Roenwolfe delivers. The band offers an intriguing sound that draws on both classic and modern metal, and that should appeal to wide audience. Already at this demo stage they seem mostly focused on what they want to do, and the results are very promising. Many bands and projects spend years getting to the point where they can write focused, polished material, but Project: Roenwolfe is already there, and if they keep developing their sound, their upcoming full-length shall be nothing short of exceptional.

That was awesome of you, thanks for writing that man! You were spot on about the production being recorded differently/done at different times. It's my major complaint about the thing as well. Thanks again :D

Yes thank you so much, I'm pleasantly surprised at the comparisons you made between my voice and some of my idols. I'm honored. My only gripe is it's Lascaille's Shroud and not Cloud.

Oops... that's what I get for writing a review at work in between projects on a busy day! That is embarrassing... especially as I was listening to Lascaille's Shroud later that day (which I think I will write a review of as well... there are not many albums that can completely floor me, but "Leaving Earth Behind" definitely did it).

And I have definitely enjoyed your vocal style - as much as I hate to make Nevermore comparisons (since they are merely a reference point, not a soundalike), at times it made me think of what would have happened if Warrel Dane was less of an acquired taste, and more technically proficient, less raspy and more melodic. The style is definitely your own though, as I wouldn't mistake you for any other singer. Can't wait for a full-length release from you guys!

As a side note, thank you guys for making this demo available for download. It was a pleasure to listen to it and to review it, and I will be glad to do the same for any future music from this project.

Warrel Dane is seriously my number 1 as far as vocal heroes go.

My closest performance to his style is the song "Covenant of Blackened Blood" on my old music MySpace http://www.MySpace.com/patrickhoytmusic

You can go back and edit your review and resubmit to fix the mistake if you'd like.

We'll be working on getting Lascaille's Shroud added to MA very soon, so we'll let you know when they approve the page. :)

That's an awesome review. As a newb to reviewing, and being about to write PMUSA an editorial about Project: Roenwolfe, it was really dimensionally useful to me to read your response. You put a whole lot of great information into a really well-organized package. Thanks for posting that.

Dude, that was a whole separate addition to the track when you were doing shit to it later? That rules. It fit so well with the song that it felt like it had been conceived as part of the whole from the very beginning. It's also very well put-together. Mad props.

Technically the foundation for the idea was laid out - I wanted some kind of news clips talking about the state of America fading out with the end and I just half assed pitched the idea of it to Cameron. He made it his own and completely dominated it in a way I never could have imagined. Turned out way better than anything I had in mind, and he deserves all credit due.
